The McCain Pep Talk

I guess that leaves McCain as the last man standing. Hooray? Not so much.

Yeah, I voted for McCain (oh the shame) but, there is a part of me that was really hoping Romney would pull it off at the last second. That part would, of course, be my conscience.

I am not exactly jumping for joy that McCain is our man. My main reason for giving my vote to McCain is  exactly what a recent campaign ad of his pointed out: McCain is the only one who can beat Hillary or Obama. That is the most important thing to me and it should be to all conservatives. Nothing scares me more than socialized health care and troop withdrawal dates.

So, Limbaugh and Coulter want to say that they will support Hillary Clinton? GREAT! Go ahead, back Hillary in the name of publicity and ratings! I honestly think she may be easier to beat than Obama. I know plenty of democrats that can’t stand her, let alone republicans. I am not in love with McCain but, no one will be able to convince me that he is worse for America than either one of the democrats.

When it comes down to it, would you rather we have a left leaning republican or a far left democrat? Sometimes you just have to vote for the lesser of 2 evils.

So, swallow your pride Republicans. Man up! Grow a pair and admit that McCain is the only choice that we have! We have to stop whining and sounding like a bunch of spoiled liberals (I’m looking at you, Glenn Beck). We have to back McCain and sell him to the hard right because when republicans don’t vote, America loses! We can’t afford to lose anything right now, especially not the war.

Let us try to forget the fact that McCain is not a “true” conservative. Let us instead, wake up and realize that he is the only one running with any conservative values. If that is my only choice, I’ll take it. Besides, McCain is more conservative than people give him credit for. I disagree with him on many things but, the fact is he is strong on terrorism, fiscal responsibility and (for all you bible thumpers) he is pro-life. He may not be the perfect conservative, but he is the only conservative we have. We will just have to keep our fingers crossed about the environment and immigration.

So, quit your grumbling and put that McCain bumper sticker on your car. I will if you will. Ready? Set? You go first.

It’s About Character, Stupid.

I have decided to vote for John McCain.

Now, before you start screaming “traitor”, hear me out. John McCain is not exactly America’s most conservative Senator. I know that. I have issues with his stance on immigration. I have issues with campaign finance reform. But, the truth is, at this point McCain may be the only Republican I actually respect.

I like Mitt Romney. I think he is smart and God knows he is attractive (but, if all I care about is smart and attractive then I might as well vote for John Edwards, God forbid). The thing that I don’t like about Romney is that he wants to test the water before he gives his opinions. He wants to see what America thinks before he tells us what he thinks. I don’t like that and I don’t trust that. I really want a President that can think for himself.

I like Mike Huckabee. Who doesn’t? (Well, besides Romney.) Huckabee is a NICE guy. I am a sucker for the “awe shucks” candidate. But, Huck has a bad habit. He says a lot of stupid stuff. It’s like he just says whatever comes to his mind. He says insulting things that he may or may not mean as an insult and he throws religion around a lot. http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Huckabee_Amend_Constitution_to_meet_Gods_0115.html He reminds me of a certain President that has the lowest approval rating in history. Another guy I really like. I won’t tell you his name but his initials are George W. Bush. I can just look at “Dubya” and see what Huck would be like in office… daily media beatings and the but of world wide jokes. Yeah, I don’t think we need another guy like Bush.

Thompson doesn’t even want to be the President and who can blame him? He would be the perfect conservative candidate if he actually changed out of his house slippers and did a little stumping.

Rudy? Well, if I were to vote for him, I would have to admit to myself that character doesn’t matter. And it DOES matter. Rudy strikes me as shady and untrustworthy. I think he is a bad ass, which I like. But, being tough might be his only good quality. That is not good enough for me.

If nothing else, this election comes down to experience and character. The only candidate that has the experience to win and end this war is John McCain. McCain has been right about the war since day 1. The only candidate with character that I trust to do what he believes is right (even if I don’t agree with him) is John McCain. John McCain is the only choice as far as I can see. I guess if it came down to it, I would vote for Romney. And, let’s be honest, ANY of the Republicans (including that loon, Ron Paul) are better than either one of the democrats… especially Monica Lewinsky’s ex-boyfriend’s wife.

Romney, Huckabee and religion- Are you kidding me?

Aren’t we past this yet?

Mitt Romney recently gave a speech on his faith (all faiths, really) and their place in American Government. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,315486,00.html He did a fantastic job. It was inspiring and well executed. Was it Kennedy’s speech of 47 years ago? No. Are we America of 47 years ago? No. Maybe that is why I find the whole thing so frustrating. I know that Romney needed to make that speech. I know that there are a lot of people out there who would rather nominate an Atheist than a Mormon. There are people (even within my own family) who will tell you that The Church Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is a cult. I am not one of them. If you can call LDS a cult, then, really, what ISN’T a cult?

I was raised in a Pentecostal family. I am now a practicing Methodist. Admittedly, I have never been to a Mormon church. But, I know plenty of Mormons. I will tell you that I don’t know everything there is to know about being a Mormon. But, I have met lots of them and the ones I know are kind and giving people. The kind of people that the rest of our Christian faiths wish we had more of. The kind of people who walk the walk and talk the talk. I have never known a Mormon to judge me unfairly for being a Methodist. So, it drives me a little nuts when people judge Romney because he is a Mormon. If anything, I think it makes me like him and trust him a little more! I may not agree with or understand the doctrine of LDS, but at least the man has convictions! Doesn’t that mean something? It doesn’t matter what church he goes to. It matters how he lives his life and what kind of character he has.

I don’t know all there is to know about the Mormon religion. But, apparently I know more than Mike Huckabee does! Huck, who is a Southern Baptist minister, asked a New York Times reporter this week: “Don’t Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?” Huckabee came out today and said that the question was taken out of context and that they were in the middle of a long conversation. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1207/7357.html Does that excuse it? Are you kidding me? I don’t know if they beleive that Jesus and the devil are brothers. I don’t care if they do. HEY! I hear that the Catholics PRAY to MARY! That’s NUTS! Irony? Anyone?

Now, I’m not Glenn Beck (and I swear to Jesus and his brother that if Glenn doesn’t stop talking about the Mormon issue, blood is going to shoot out of MY eyes) but, I do believe in an American’s right to practice whatever religion they want. Not voting for Romney simply because he is a Mormon would make me an idiot the same way that voting for Romney simply because he is a Mormon would make me an idiot. Maybe this hits a little too close to home for me. As I said, I was raised in the Pentecostal faith and even though I made a choice not to practice that religion, I have to tell you, I am still pretty sensitive about people poking fun at the “snake handlers”.  Those fundamentalist crazies are my family!

I said that to say this, what religion, if you take a good, long, logical look at it, does NOT sound crazy?

We have no right to judge Mitt Romney on the basis of his religion. We do, however, have a right to judge Mike Huckabee on the basis of his stupid questions. Ok, so maybe he was just trying to get the answer to a rumor he heard about the Mormon religion. Or, maybe he said it to get people thinking about the dangers of the LDS church? Which is worse? Either way, that is a scary scenario.

We already have a President, bless his heart, who can’t speak intelligently and who many consider a religious nut… I for one, don’t want to go through this last 8 years again.
